Phase 5: G59 Receiver Assembly

The components in this phase are marked with letter R in suffix.

For schmematic diagram and component list refer to Assembly manual which is enclosed with your kit.

Start with the assembly of IC1R and C2R.
IC1R is located to the right of IC3P, as per photo.

Pay attention of orientation of PIN1.
Note: unlike the previously installed IC3P (Phase 3), the IC1R comes with no visible orientation mark. Pin 1 is located underneath the manufacturer's logo. Position and install IC1R as per photo.

Install components marked in red, resistors R1R to R34R and trimmer TR1.

Install USM capacitors C5R, C6R, C7R and C8R

Note: While installing components in this phase - escpecially capacitors - it is extremely important to install them as per photos. Due to the components density on PCB, relying on component designators printed on PCB is not recommended.

Install USM capacitors C9R, C10R, C11R and C12R

Install NPO capacitors C3R, C15R, C33R, C34R, C35R and electrolytic capacitor C2R.

Install NPO capacitors C16R, C18R, C19R, C21R, C22R, C23R, C25R, C29R, C32R, C35R, C37R, C1? and integral circuits IC2R, IC3R, IC4R and IC5R.
Note: Unmarked integral circuits are supplied in bag labeled "OP IC2R to IC5R". These are NOT the NE5532's !

Install electrolytic capacitors C17R, C20R, C24R, C27R, C28R, C30R, C31R, C36R and integral circuits IC6R, IC7R.

Install RL1R, SV1PB and KP5.

PCB board, components installed in phase 1 to 4.

Image Rejection pre-adjustment

Connect Ohm meter between pin 2 of IC4R and left end of resistor R16R. Adjust TR1R to 560 Ohm.

Install K1 audio gain cable. Flat two lines, 220mm of wire with 2 pin nylon connectors.

Voltage test

1. Connect 12V DC power supply to plug DC1S.
2. Check the voltage on all pins of IC1R.

Getting "on air" - first receiver test

Connect a temporary wire between BNC antenna connector and RX input C1R capacitor.

Connect an antenna (any band between 160m and 6m).

Connect power supply and USB cable. Connect stereo audio cable from receiver output (KP5 connector) to audio card input.

Start GSDR software.

Under PowerSDR Setup - General - Audio set your sound card audio properties, driver and mixer.

At this stage you should be able to receive signals.

G59 Image Adjustment (hardware)

The image adjustment precedure is similar to one described at http://genesisradio.com.au/G3020/a1.html - Please scroll to the bottom of the page.

Fine tune trimmer TR1R until unwanted image is rejected as much as possible. If you have already set the resistance to 560 Ohm, then maximum rejection will be achieved within 1 to 2 turns either way (in this particular case maximum rejection of -40 dB was at 564 Ohm).
