Phase 1

The first phase of assembly is to build power supply for digital IC. Solder components as per diagram and connect the power supply. Voltage at JK1 jumper test point should be +5V and the green LED diode should light.

Phase 2

The G3020 oscillator section is the most complicated part of the SDR transceiver.
It is very important to place components as per layout diagram and solder them very carefully.
Assemble in following order: jumpers, diodes, resistors, capacitors, 74HC04s, transistors and quartz crystals.
The first oscillator to check is one for 30m band which resonates at 40500 kHz.
1. solder temporary wire (W1) between jumper JK1 and JP1 pin 3.
2. check the voltage at test point TP1 with digital multi meter. It should read around +2V.
If the test voltage is 0V or 5V then oscillator is not oscillating.
3. in same way test three remaining oscillators by connecting W1 wire to points JP1 pin 1 (56.180MHz), JP2 pin 2 (56.552MHz) and JP2 pin 1 (56.928MHz)

The photo shows the position and pin layout of JP1 and JP2.

Note:
-all four transistors installed are BC546B.
-all four diodes are 1N4148. Pay attention to orientation of diodes.

Phase 3


The Band Switch

The G3020 band switch consists of 2 DPDT three position switches (ON-OFF-ON) and 4 yellow LED diodes which indicates the selected oscillator. The switches and diodes are connected as per diagram below. The band switch is connected to main PCB board with 6 wires JP1 (1,2,3), J5 and JP2 (1,2). The wires are then connected to pins as marked on photos in Phase 2.

The location of pins JP1 (1 and 3) and JP2 (1 and 2) are shown in previous phase. The JP1 Pin 2 is located between pins 1 and 3. The J5 is located on the top-right corner of PCB, as shown here:

The builder is required to provide a temporary switchboard.
(the switches and diodes are provided with the kit).

Insert the LED diodes in 3mm holes as shown here: the longer lead (Anode) facing the switches.

Wire the switches and diodes as per photo. For details, refer to the schematic diagram as shown above.

Connect the band switch to PCB.
Attention: always select one band segment (one oscillator) at a time!

Phase 4

Dividers


This phase installs the flip flop dividers, which divide the local oscillator's output
into four quadrature signals.

Install in following order:
resistors 4x100 Ohm, 2x220 Ohm
chokes 2x47uH
NPO capacitors 4x100nF, 1x10nF

electrolytic capacitors 1x220uF, 1x100uF

Tune HF receiver to detect the signals from the dividers by selecting one
frequency of G3020 oscillator at a time.

Install diodes, resistors, NPO capacitors, USM capacitors
and integral circuit.





Install trimmer potentiometer, chokes, NP caps, relays,
electrolytic caps,
audio connector and BNC connector.

Temporary Connection Between Antenna and RX (Mixer Input)
Solder a wire to connect the antenna "hot" pin on the BNC connector to the
Mixer Stage's Input point on the board, as indicated below.

Check +voltages on each NE5532:

pin 1 = 6V
pin 2 = 6V
pin 3 = 6V
pin 4 = 0V
pin 5 = 6V
pin 6 = 6V
pin 7 = 6V
pin 8 = 12V

At this stage it is absolutely essential to ensure that
both I and Q channels are working properly
and image rejection is adjusted (-40dB or better).

Note: above adjustment tutorial is for G40
but the basics are the same. For example, for 30m band
LO (center frequency) is 10.125 MHz.
Set signal generator or 30m transmitter to 10.117 MHz and
adjust image at 10,136.
